this seems to be just a smudge on the surface, there is no particular reason for it.

    Posted

  • michaelaye by michaelaye scientist

victorbush1, the whole surface is covered by translucent co2 ice here, so to have smudges is significant.

It could be a accident that happened when aliens tried to do science experiments to find out about earth like we are finding out about mars

    Posted

  • DugLess by DugLess

I Love doing this, seen some good things which I have classified but the shadows on some images make it more difficult

    Posted

  • luckybucky1 by luckybucky1

My theory about the brown smudges is that magma has erupted out of the volcanoes it got cold and set.

    Posted

  • michaelaye by michaelaye scientist

we need to have statistics on every image. It is actually almost incredible, what mass statistics are able to do,results are much cleaner!

    Posted

  • Dafijis by Dafijis

It is feasible that these smudges are just shadows. I am personally more interested in the ridges that cover the picture. What are they?

    Posted

  • michaelaye by michaelaye scientist

These smudges in the above image are most definitely not shadows. There are some images, where shadows could appear inside spider channels.

    Posted

  • wassock by wassock moderator

The 3 features referred to by nologic do appear to be very similar, the lower 2 appear to be pretty much identical the other almost so

    Posted

Is the colour important? These look like plumes or could be stains on the sand dunes.

    Posted

  • michaelaye by michaelaye scientist

the ripples you see are not sand dunes but negative channels or troughs in the ground, carved by gas jets that bring up those fans.

these are dust and sand deposits transported through a layer of CO2 ice by CO2 gas jets. Everywhere in this image is an invisible CO2 ice ..
