Is this a fan + a shadow of its plume?

the bluish-ness comes from ice having cleaned itself from previous dust on top.it's blue because the co2 ice there is fresher than elsewhere

Is the black colour from carbon? Do you have images close in time to check if black turns blue as carbon is oxidised?

    Posted

  • michaelaye by michaelaye scientist

the colors are not as different in reality as they look here.we maximize color stretches to maximize information visible.

but we confirmed by previous images, that in almost all cases blue fans are exactly where black fans have been before.

and it just becomes more and more unlikely, that later eruptions of pure co2 that than refrosts deposits always exactly on top of old fans.

therefore we prefer the explanation that the dark fan deposit does something to the ice that creates more likely refrosting from atmosphere.

or the fan dust itself sinks through the ice and leaves more fresh, brighter looking ice behind.
