    Formed while wet? Looks like mud. Also rippling on surface. Erosion patterns in seams like odd pockmarking you can get in sandstone too.

    The surface is flat and the dark areas are fans breaking through the cracks in the ground. The ground looks as though it is covered with red dust and the golden objects is actually the real surface cleared by winds.

    co2 gas trapped under solid co2 ice and the pressure has forced gas + dust through fissures then ice sublimes leaving this pattern.

    Agree with GregBowden. 'Cushioning' effect is caused by reducing fan density. SW to NE marks on the flat surface actually straddle the fans.
