The feature in the Curiosity image- tis produced by wind erosion and rock materials of different strength. They call it a ventifact. Geologists have found similar things on Earth where the weaker more wind erosive rock gets eroded away leaving the parts of the rock that were stronger and more resistant to the wind. http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/images/msl/20130211/ventifacts.pdf
