classification of fans from fissures

  • wassock by wassock moderator

How should emissions from fissures be classified? There are often what would be fans, but they appear to be coming from linear features rather than point sources there is clearly direction but the fan tool doesn't work too well

Definitely mark the black linear features as fans and if it doesn't look like it has a clear direction (left to right - up to down) The fans and blotches do come from linear features. Those are channels carved by carbon dioxide gas trapped under the thawing carbon dioxide ice sheet on the south pole of Mars. The gas at the base of the ice sheet breaks through and brings dust and dirt entrained in it to the surface that we believe forms these features. You can learn more about what these features are here and here.
