This photo seems out of this world!

Could someone tell me a little about this image?

Hi jckaatz. I can tell you that your title is correct - It is out of this world, it's on Mars 😃

I can only tell you what I know, or what I think I know about this image and I wouldn't want to put you on the wrong track by telling you something that's not right, or that I've got confused. Why not tell us what you think it's all about, or perhaps you could be more specific about what it is you're not sure about? Doesn't mean I'll be able to help any more - but maybe I can.

Lots of these images look better (easier?) when they're rotated 180 degress. Apparently, our brain recognises shapes better when light comes in from top-left (in an image like this). They are often more understandable when viewed as a negative image. You might find this useful: http://talk.planetfour.org/#/boards/BPF0000001/discussions/DPF00009sy - then follow the link in the first post. If you go there, please make sure you read the Scientist's remarks on that page about the negative/rotation idea. Cheers.

Damn it, I wanted to say that!

Negative images look good but they are considered to be an altered reality... http://the-orangery.weebly.com/mars-2.html

You are better off inverting an image - some examples here... http://the-orangery.weebly.com/mars-1.html

By the way, my negations are a three stage process..

    Hi JM,

If you don't mind me asking, what image editing program do you use?

I use Paint Shop Pro 7 mostly. I also like IrfanView (freeware). What do you use?

Well I don't really use any specific product. More like tinker with a few different utilities such as MS Paint....or editing software that comes with the camera's I've purchased, though I've got a download from Canon for working with RAW images...called (DPP) Digital Photo Professional, which I just cracked open to look at a few of these images.

Shame of it is, I'm sitting on a new copy of Photoshop (blah-blah) that I'm told is a BEAR to work with, so I haven't even installed it. It probably is the only one of these that can negate an image, though the DPP utility has R,G, B tools so maybe I can strip the color out with those?....but then that's not really 'negating' either.

You can probably guess that I'm more of a picture taker than an image baker, though I did grab Fotosketcher last night to see what I could do with some of my non-astro photo's.

Have used Photoshop in the past when working for a pre-press company. FotoSketcher is an excellent utility for creating artworks or pencil drawings from photographs. Here's a few that I did... http://the-orangery.weebly.com/digital-artworks.html

I'd give IrfanView a look too (it can do most things)... and it's freeware!

Let me know how you get on.
