Can anyone tell me what these red spots mean in the photo?

They look more like some kind of image artifact, from processing or unusual data, than a real red colour on Mars. Just my (regular user) guess. The edges of the red dots are too sharp to make me think they are from the original image - they look like someone took the image in a paint package and drew a few red dots on it with a pen type tool, ie no averaging in from the areas around them. So it makes me think they're artificial (by Humans/computers) than natural Mars features.

I figured as much, however they do tend to coincide with 'peaks; in the pattern, not sure if we're seeing the artificial colour because of something in the image.
