    what would cause the bubble look effect in some places

    What you are seeing are dimples, not bubbles. The problem is that our brains are used to light coming from above, but the sunlight in these images comes in from the lower right, so it's easy to get mixed up. It gets easier to see what's happening the more images you see - honest. 😃

    Look closely at the 'spider' channel in the lower right corner of your image here. See how the sunlight is lighting up the left of the channel, with the right side being in shadow. Once you recognise the channel, notice how the dimples are lit up the same way.
