What causes the blue color in some of these pictures? Is it something on Mars or does the satellite that takes the pictures just show it as having a blue color?

Hi, I've posted on the HiRise thread as well. The blue in this image is thought to be caused by carbon dioxide frost. Jury is still out on the how and why bit though. And I'm not sure that it's clear if it's really blue or just the way the camera optics present it.

There's a bit on this in the FAQ on the help board http://talk.planetfour.org/#/boards/BPF0000005/discussions/DPF0000cfp

There's a very informative blog post about the blue fans, with lots of great images included. The whole of the blog post is interesting, but the blue fans section starts about halfway down. http://blog.planetfour.org/2014/09/10/a-summary-of-a-p4-summer/

    Welcome to Mars. 😃
