Hi Bob, this image is from the Ithaca area at a time when the surface is largely defrosted. I think that the white flecks are most likely small patches of remaining frost lying in slightly sheltered parts of the terrain. ~ Pete.

Hi Bob. I agree with Pete's suggestion that the white bits are probably remnants of the seasonal icelayer. If you haven't already done so, you can follow the 'View HiRise Image' link (bottom right of your image) to get a wider view of the area and lots of other information. The Jpeg 'map projected' or 'non-map' images there are best for a quick view. Some of the others are very large files indeed.
