Striking Features WithIn Fans

  • msc386 by msc386

This is a very interesting image. There appear to be 7 fans in the image with appears to be bluish CO2 frost deposited in them along
with red dust or soil. All of the fans are weather-vaning in the same direction. Fan density and direction would seem to indicate that they
formed at approximately the same time. As for the frost... possibly occurred after fan formation? There is a very large fan that was cropped
in the lower right corner of the image. The fans were marked with "features" in them to draw attention to the frost.

    Thoughts, anyone?

The whole frost thing is an open question. It could be frost or it could be a change in the cyrstalline structure of the ice caused by the fan particles sinking into the ice and the CO2 then being more heated. Michael Aye from the science team wrote a more detailed description here.

We have a summer undergraduate student taking at look at the frost images people have marked on Talk. You can learn a bit more about what she's doing this summer on the Planet Four blog.

I saw something like this one of the images I was assigned to classify; immensely interesting.
