Shades of dust

  • Scummer80 by Scummer80

In this image Image APF0001nd3 and in another I recently classified, I noticed there are two shades of dust fans/blotches, one black and another red, with the red perhaps overlaying the black. Is it possible that the black fans/blotches are older, or is it a different substance?

Then there's this one, Image APF0001ia6 with what l assume to be patches of ordinary grey surface dust. Is it surface dust, or again something that has come up from below?

Image APF0001lg3 I've also just found this one, with red dust overlaying orange.

You are correct in identifying both red and black dust. The red stuff is a little rarer than the black, but certain areas do seem to hold more red stuff than other areas. Sometimes you might find an image with only the red dust on show, but again, these are more rare than black areas.

I'd suggest that the grey stuff is the icelayer which still covers the martian surface when the fans and blotches appear.
