  I'm no expert but I'd say the sooty marks were fans produced from very fine cracks and pockets.

  I'm with Jelly small 'active' fans many coming from cracks or along lines of weakness in the ice layer

  Always think a look at the HiRISE view of these images shows the cracks and linear venting with multiple small fans well, (as it does in this image) Really helps me see and understand whats going on.
