Fantastic image wassock. Your image isn't bad either ElizabethB 😃. However, I think the image a little misleading. My guess is that the area is relatively flat... here's another image from the same area... APF0001zrm. In other words the 'shadows' could turn out to be dust and grit.

To give you context here's the full image . I think what you might be seeing is regions of the the South Polar Layered Deposits being exposed in the image.

Meg There's an awful lot of material that has been removed to leave these features (specially if we view it a s the side of a valley where everything was once at the same level as the topmost layer), what's the theory on where all that stuff is now and how it got there?
