Jshoe, the conventional wisdom on the white smoke is that it is fresh ice/frost forming on the dusty fan. The images are all crops from much larger images. If you are seeing similar looking fans on a similar background then you are probably seeing images from the same larger pic. See the HiRise thread for details. Usually images of the same area at a different time will look different, both in terms of how the fans appear and the colour of the background.
