Fan Tails

What is creating the fan tails (not sure what is the best way to describe them?. It looks like the fans are going in two directions.

Theory is that co2 gas is venting from the sharp end of the features (fans). the gas contains dust which is blown by the wind and settles out into this distinctive pattern. Where the fans have 2 lobes like these the wind has changed direction between eruptions.
