Explosions?

Several of these fans look spiky, as if caused by sudden explosions of material sprayed out - particularly the large one right of centre which has some long streaks. Also, fans usually point the same way in any given picture, which suggests that they were produced while the surface wind was at a constant direction - if wind is variable, perhaps they all exploded over a short period, or maybe wind is fairly constant. Why would one area's fans explode all at once? Would increasing stress set off the first one, causing shocks that exploit weaknesses in the ice and trigger off many more?
