  are these large boulders and there shadows or fans? i cant really tell.

  I think fans - boulders would have a bright (sun-facing) side

  i would say there fans, boulders are small and hardly cast a shadow, you can only tell there boulders because the bright side is opposite the prevailing light areas ie there lit side is opposite the channel lit side,
