Could this be a similar rock formation to that seen in limestone paving some created through the periods of the ice age on planet earth forming clints and grykes? Examples of this on a much smaller scale are those seen where glaciers once existed like the top of Malham cove, UK. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Limestone_pavement_above_Malham_Cove.jpg

I featured one of these in the post 'Orange corrugations'. Believe it or not, the surface is generally flat.
