real ash explosions?

if they are ask explosions? then is this the first time they have exploded? why is it only going in one direction? based on wind surely the wind changes and you might get ash plumes coming out of a hole in multiple directions. and if this process had been happening for a very long time wouldn't you see them looking like ash volcanoes on earth?. this looks like a very light sprinkling of ash. you can still see the pattern of the landscape through the plume.
