what caused the cracks?

  some sort of liquid water? liquid magma? something caused the cracks. they are not brittle cracks such as an earthquake might show, but cracks liquid leaves behind. all starting from a center point. volcano maybe?

  but gas rises? gas doesn't flow channeling pathways. surely it would just release gas into the atmosphere?
