What are the #brightspots at the fan origins?

What are the #brightspots at the origin of the fans? There are a couple with no fan - but seem to have shadows on the same side as fans

Wondering how much of the fan is on the ground and how much is #shadow - how long is the exposure on each picture?

Is it more likely that the fans/blotches arise from under #boulders or pits? Wouldn't low angle of sun give boulders a different shadow?
