what would cause the difference in shading in upper left of image?

Hi. This is part of a ridge in 'Inca City'. Sunlight coming from bottom right of the image is lighting the up-slope of the ridge, with the down-slope being in shadow. Notice the boulders in upper and lower right corners of the image. You'll meet a lot of these. Boulders are being collected by Pete (p.titchen) in his 'Boulders' discussion on the Citizen Science board, so feel free to post any boulder images you find on there for him.
It's well worth following the 'View Hirise Image' link below the image to get a wider view of the area. On the HiRise page have a look at the JPEG Greyscale images. These are best to begin with because some of the others are massive files. Cheers.

PS: On the HiRise page, the images have sunlight coming from the left (opposite of the images here) so bear that in mind when you're trying to make sense of what's happening. 😉
